A virtual audit, also known as remote audit, is the method of conducting an audit remotely, using electronic methods such as video conferencing, email, and telephone to obtain audit evidence, just like you would during an on-site audit.
Virtual or remote audits are an increasingly common way to overcome barriers that prevent in-person audits. With the same goals, the virtual audit process covers the same ground as an on-site visit. Even regulators are embracing this trend with some performing remote audits or inspections under certain circumstances.
The overall goal of a virtual audit is to evaluate evidence objectively in order to determine the extent to which the audit criteria have been fulfilled. Remote auditing uses tools such as file & screen sharing, video conferencing (via Zoom, MS Teams, Go-To-Meeting platforms), and live data analysis.
One of the advantages is the ability to allow auditors to receive and share data, review documentation and processes, conduct interviews and make observations with auditees from all over the world without the need to commute to the audit site.
The utilization of technology allows audits to be carried out remotely and also saves time and money. Since data can be accessed from anywhere, such as a cloud portal, the organizations are also likely to be more engaged in the process if a set time is allocated for a remote audit activity. And, they are also less likely to be side-tracked or disturbed with any urgent work requests.
